mobilkom austria demos 'Supercharged' 3G HSDPA
April 6, 2005
mobilkom austria, Austrian mobile operator, demonstrated the potential of its wireless network evolution with High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) technology from Nortel.
At a press reception in the a1 concept store in Vienna, Nortel's HSDPA solution was deployed to allow mobilkom austria to show how rapid FTP downloading, real-time television broadcasts from Austria's GoTV, and live web cam applications could change the future of wireless communications.
The demonstrations included both Sierra Wireless and Option data cards connected to laptop computers and the latest handsets from LG Electronics.
"We are continuing to see momentum build behind the next generation of 'supercharged' wireless technology that will enhance the user experience and change the ways in which we all communicate," said Peter MacKinnon, president, GSM/UMTS, Nortel. "mobilkom austria was our first UMTS customer to announce a fully deployed network. Today they are demonstrating a continuing commitment to wireless network evolution."
By making more efficient use of the existing network and boosting throughput, HSDPA can significantly reduce operating costs for service providers while delivering a better end user experience. HSDPA boosts network capacity to carry up to three times as much data traffic and up to twice as many wireless users per cell site compared to today's UMTS networks.
